Sloth

Noted for their slowness of movement, Sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down in the trees of the tropical rainforests of South America and Central America. They are considered to be most closely related to anteaters. Sloths are almost helpless on the ground, but are able to swim.

Why They Matter

Two of the six species of sloths rate high on the IUCN Red List of endangered animals. Sloths are an integral part of tropical rain forest ecosystems and the health of sloth populations is wholly dependent on the health of tropical rain forests. As tropical rain forests are at risk of deforestation, sloths will lose their shelter and food source without an abundance of trees.
